A dismal 2-16 spring it was as bench guys who were not expected to make the team played all the way through and went nowhere. Nobody cares about W/L in ST anyway. The real surprise was 30 year old career minor league first baseman Allen Brown who will get a look. First basemen being a dime a dozen,he had been stuck behind other awesome hitters all that time but made good on it when given a chance. Several others who didn't hit will be in the lineup opening day but don't look for them to last long. Here is the lineup expected to get most of the playing time during the season:
C Omar Feliz
1B Ivan Morales
2B Lonnie Felsen
SS James Fujiwarra
3B Tom Winston
LF Alan Duncan
CF Pedro Prieto
RF Edwin Jones
DH Carlton Wade
The starting rotation is more stable and looks like this:
1 Vic Brand
2 Turner McMahon
3 Cesar Quinten
4 Dusty Kennedy
5 Dicky Wingo
It would be no surprise if Greg Willis or Steven Dransfeldt grabbed spots in the rotation sooner of later. Neftali Lee was a crushing disappointment as was second baseman/utilityman Tim Lofton who didn't look ready but are likely to make the club anyway. As usual, this club looks like it is in deep trouble;this is reflected in the power rankings which reveal just how empty the farm system really is. Two starting pitchers(Brand and McMahon) are getting gray.None of the other major leaguers are really old;the one time prospects are already established at the major league level and look to be around for quite a few years so the only blessing is the club isn't cursed with aging.
