Hobbs Special Awards: Season 10 Winners!

ROY HOBBS SPECIAL AWARDS

Every year Roy Hobbs gives out special awards that WIS just doesn't! This year has been an interesting year, as always. We have a mine field of young stars "blowing" up everywhere, and even some old stars who refuse to quit shining! These are the players who have continued to put up great numbers all throughout this season, and all on their way to WIS stardom. So while we await the league votes for the standard WIS awards here are this years winners for Hobbs special awards!

#1: The Highly coveted "Batting Title" Goes to: Fred Henderson of the Dover Bull Dogs (83-79). For the 2nd year in a row Fred Henderson wins the Hobb's batting title with a league leading .368 avg. Although he has dropped from his league record making .399 avg of season 9 Henderson has established himself as the man this title clearly belongs to. Of course, it wasn't exactly a steal with the likes of J.T. Johnson (.353) of the Kansas City Jayhawks, and Brendan Flynn of the Pawtucket Pencil-Necked Geeks (.345). Hobb's has some excellent hitters, but with a career .356, Henderson is hard to top! He's a real behemoth at the plate, and a true batting machine! Congratulations to Fred Henderson for winning this years batting title.

#2: The "Iron Man Award": The most durable player of the year. Usually this guy never rests, never gets hurt, is never benched...he is the "Iron Man."

And.....the S10 "Iron man Award" goes to:
the "One and Only" Sidney Fabregas of the Charlotte Codes (78-84). Even in his aging years Sidney Fabregas shows up to play, and he shows up every day! Fabregas played in every one of the 162 games, in which he had 657 AB's, 195 hits, 35 HR's, 129 RBI's, and a .297 avg. And that's just offensive, extremely offensive! On the defensive side, he was just as solid. Fabregas turned in 1431.2 total innings, he had 1431 put outs from 1B, 118 assists, took part in 139 double plays, and with only 4 errors had a .997 fielding percentage. With production like this why wouldn't you play the guy as much as possible? Sidney Fabregas is definitely the man you want at the plate and out in the field at all times. He absolutely despises the bench, and luckily for him he never sees it. He has more than proven himself here at Hobb's, and will surely go on to the Hall of Fame. For now, however, he is happy playing at age 34 and has shown that he is still capable of being in the game ALL of the time! Congratulations to Sidney Fabregas for being this years Iron Man.

#3: The "Playmaker Award": The most exciting player in the field. The man who awes the fans with his miraculous playmaking ability; a man people come to games just to watch play, and fielding coaches drool over.

And.....the S10 "Playmaker Award" goes to: Derrick Kelly of the Kansas City Jayhawks (110-52). For the 2nd time in as many years Derrick Kelly has finished the season with 32 plus plays, Just 2 shy of Syracuse Orange's Hector Henriquez's Season 9 record holding 34. Still, Kelly has left his mark the past few years as one of Hobb's rising stars in the the field and also turned in a .985 fielding percentage. Kelly has proved to be a true playmaker. It's guys like this one that make playing the field look easy! When the game is on the line, and it really counts, he's there to make that diving catch, nail a runner at the plate, or just get the team out of an inning. And in doing so he changes the entire outcome of the game with one play. He does what playmakers do! Congratulations to Derrick Kelly on winning this years playmaker award!

#4: The "Boogey-man Award": The man most feared at the plate. This is the Barry Bonds of old, the man pitchers dread having to pitch to and often don't. In fact, every time this man walks up to the plate they look over to the pitching coach and beg for that "free pass" sign.

And.....the S10 "Boogey-Man" Award goes to: The same guy it always does, Jim Killebrew of the Milwaukee High Lifes (72-90). As you could probably tell, Killebrew is no stranger to this award, this 30 year old first baseman has now won the award every year but one since we started. He lost only to the almost equally "feared" Alan Logan in Season 6. In fact, this year Alan Logan, with 116 BB's, came extremely close to winning the award for the second time and actually has 3 more BB's that Killebrew (113 BB's). Logan also had been hit by a pitch 11 times, 8 more than Killebrew's 3. So ... why, you might be asking, did Logan not win? Because at the end of every year, only when the league rolls is the "intentional walk" statistic available. Killebrew has consistently led that category, for whatever reason. Accordingly, I expect that 40+ of his 113 walks were intentional. I suppose we will see. Either way, with a .328 avg, a .448 obp, a .666 slugging percentage, and a 1.114 Ops, Killebrew is the winner, again! Pitchers dread this guy! So Congratulations to Jim "Boogey-Man" Killebrew, again, on winning this years Boogey-man award!

#5: The "Base Burglar Award": This award goes to the Rickey Henderson's of the league, was inspired by a Hobb's man named Hawk, and goes to the man who burglarizes the most bases throughout the season.

And.....the S10 "Base Burglar Award" goes to: Cesar Pena of the Syracuse Orange (58-104). For the last several years this award has been owned by the speedy Bobby Mientkiewicz of the El Paso TaTa's. However, with 77 steals Pena was able to sneak in just one more base than Mientkiewicz's 76 steals. Of Course, Pena also played in 7 more games, and had 68 more AB's than Mientkiewicz. Still, take nothing away from this speedburner. In the end it was Mr. Pena with the most steals. So Congratulations to Cesar Pena for winning this years base burglar award!
